Representation Independence of Nonmonotonic Inference Relations
نویسنده
چکیده
A logical concept of representation independence is developed for nonmonotonic logics , including probabilistic inference systems. The general framework then is applied to several nonmonotonic logics, particularly propo-sitional probabilistic logics. For these logics our investigation leads us to modiied inference rules with greater representation independence .

Production Inference, Nonmonotonicity and Abduction
We introduce a general formalism of production inference relations that posses both a standard monotonic semantics and a natural nonmonotonic semantics. The resulting nonmonotonic system is shown to provide a syntax-independent representation of abductive reasoning. Abduction is a reasoning from facts to their possible explanations that is widely used now in many areas of AI, including diagnosi...
متن کاملProduction and Causal Logics for Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We introduce logical formalisms of production and causal inference relations based on input/output logics of [Makinson and van der Torre, 2000]. These inference relations are assigned, however, both standard monotonic semantics, and natural nonmonotonic semantics based on the principle of explanatory closure. The resulting nonmonotonic formalisms will be shown to provide a logical representatio...
متن کاملCredulous Nonmonotonic Inference
We present a formal characterization and semantic representation for a number of credulous inference relations based on the notion of a,n epistemic state. It is shown, in particular, that credulous inference can be naturally represented in terms of expectations (see [Gardenfors and Makinson, 1994]). We describe also the relationships between credulous and usual skeptical nonmonotonic inference ...
متن کاملA Semantic Approach to Nonmonotonic Reasoning: Inference Operations and Choice
This paper presents a uniform semantic treatment of nonmonotonic inference operations that allow for inferences from infinite sets of premisses. The semantics is formulated in terms of selection functions and is a generalization of the preferential semantics of Shoham (1987), (1988), Kraus, Lehman, and Magidor (1990) and Makinson (1989), (1993). A selection function picks out from a given set o...
متن کاملNonmonotonic Inference Based on Expectations
We show how nonmonotonic inferences may elegantly be interpreted in terms of underlying expectations. The fundamental idea is that when we reason, we make use of not only the information that we firmly believe, but also expectations that guide our beliefs without quite being part of them. We propose two ways of modelling the expectations used in nonmonotonic reasoning: by expectation sets, equi...
